Personal Trainers.. a love/hate story

I wanted to quickly offer up some tips on how to choose the right personal trainer. Let me just start by saying that if you choose a trainer based on the way they look, you're a moron. The one sure fire way to add insult to your workouts is to choose a trainer based on their aesthetic. DO NOT choose a trainer because you are attracted to him/her, ladies this is a no-no! Men, you too.

If you want to lose weight, get healthy and/or build muscle, hiring a personal trainer can be a step in the right direction. A good trainer can help you to meet your goals and teach you the best way to exercise. Here's what you should know before you hand over the cash.

Are they certified, and compassionate. How many years of experience does he/she have? Will their current or past clients offer up a testimonial? What type of training regimen do they follow? Background, Background, Background!!

Finding the right trainer is like searching for a dentist, that said, if your PT puts their fingers in your mouth, you have the wrong trainer. Training can be a very personal experience, so you want to be sure that the trainer you choose is mature and sensible, not to mention discrete. Choose wisely.

NOW ON TO YOU. I "borrowed" this because it's so right on!

You can help your trainer do a better job by being a good client.

Save the chit-chat for after your session. SERIOUSLY ZIP IT.. Unless it's a fitness related topic.

Give at LEAST 24 hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule

If you have questions, write them down and bring them to your session--you'll spend less time talking and more time working out.

If you have a problem with your trainer, address it immediately.

Recognize that your trainer is there to guide you--but YOU still have to do the work! AMEN.

Ok readers, I hope that helps. It's not brain surgery. Ultimately you're shelling out the cash, so you want to get your money's worth. Always consult your physician before engaging in strenuous activity. Oh and one more tid-bit- 84 days til summer!

  1. Vitamin T,

I LOVE this! Thank you! Perhaps I'm biased towards you because, well, you're my trainer, but I hope your readers realize what an expert you are in all your fields and how amazing it is to have you blog about the path to healthy (and fashionable) living.
